Professor Harold’s research has supported thousands of parents to better manage their conflict, leading to improved well-being for their children.

We are thrilled to announce that Professor Gordon Harold, Fellow of Lucy Cavendish College and Director of the Rudd Centre at the University of Cambridge, is a finalist for the prestigious Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) 2024 Impact Prize. This recognition celebrates his groundbreaking research on the impact of parental conflict on children, and its translation into real-world support for families.

Professor Harold's work shines a light on a crucial aspect of family dynamics: the relationship between parents. While arguments are a natural part of any relationship, frequent and poorly resolved conflict can have a significant negative impact on children's mental health and their future. His research highlights that this issue is particularly prevalent in families facing economic hardship, where unemployment can exacerbate tensions.

Traditionally, support for disadvantaged families has focused on improving parent-child interactions. However, Professor Harold's innovative research demonstrates that supporting the relationship between parents, regardless of their living situation, leads to more positive outcomes for everyone involved – children and adults alike.

This impactful research has directly informed the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) Reducing Parental Conflict (RPC) Programme.  By providing resources and strategies to help parents better manage conflict, the RPC programme has already benefited thousands of families across the UK, leading to improved wellbeing for children.

Professor Harold's nomination for the Impact Prize is a testament to the power of research to drive positive change in society. His work is not only advancing our understanding of family dynamics but also providing practical solutions to improve the lives of children and families.
